Sick Girl is the 10th episode of the first season of Masters of Horror . It originally aired in North America on January 13, 2006. It was directed by Lucky McKee and based on a story written by McKee and Sean Hood.
Plot
Ida Teeter (Angela Bettis) is a shy and lesbian insect enthusiast who works at the McNaughton Museum. On her way home one day she finds out that she received a mysterious package containing a large foreign insect from Brazil in front of her door. She decides to keep it as a pet but it eventually gets loose inside her apartment, killing the manager's dog and then hiding inside Ida's pillow. On her way to work, she sees this girl named Misty Falls (Erin Brown) and starts to date her. Their relationship quickly progresses. Unlike most other girls that reject Ida, Misty is not bothered by all the bugs that Ida keeps in her house. She finds out that Misty is the daughter of professor Malcolm Wolf, Ida's college professor. But one night while Ida was having sex with Misty, the insect (named Mick by Ida a few times in the beginning) bites Misty in the ear, causing her to gradually start acting strange later in the episode.
Ida gets into trouble because her apartment manager, Lana Beasley (Marcia Bennett), wants her to leave because Ida's sexual desires with Misty get the best of her in public, and because Lana does not approve of lesbians (mainly because of her granddaughter's presence in the building).
Ida later then finds out through a sent letter that the insect was sent from Professor Malcolm Wolf. It turns out the insect is dangerously venomous and aggressive, as indicated earlier in the episode when it eats Lana's dog. The insect's bite on humans (as well as other animals) causes a parasite that is the creature's young to grow inside them, causing them to change personalities and mutate their DNA. Ida realizes this is the reason behind Misty's behavior. While she is away from her apartment, Misty makes Lana fall down the stairs after scaring her by transforming into a giant bug. When Ida goes back to her apartment, she finds out that Lana is dead, she then follows Misty back to her place to realize Misty had already been infected.
Ida asks Misty why would her father do such a thing, and Misty explains to her that her dad knew of Misty's feelings for Ida all along. He then decided to send the insect to Ida hoping it could infect her so she would be repulsive to Misty. Ida then calls Max (Jesse Hlubik), her best friend, so he could help her get rid of the insect. But once Max comes, Misty has already mutated and immediately kills Max, then the original insect jumps on Ida's back and starts to infect her.
The story ends with Ida and Misty sitting on a couch in the middle of daytime some time afterward. Both appear to be nine months pregnant. Misty asks Ida if she thinks the baby will be a boy or a girl, to which Ida replies by saying "Oh, probably a few hundred of each." The insect is directly behind their heads, feeding off their blood.
DVD and Blu-ray
The DVD was released by Anchor Bay Entertainment on June 27, 2006. The episode was the tenth episode and the sixth to be released on DVD. The episode appears on the second volume of the Blu-ray compilation of the series.
