Plot

First episode (1943-1958)

On 15 January 1993, Salvatore "Totò" Riina, superboss of Cosa Nostra was arrested, after 23 years of abscondence. While he was in prison he received a visitor, a childhood friend: Biagio Schirò. He reminded the boss of a time when they were only 13.

Riina's father found a bomb and he wanted to sell the powder from it, because he and his family were poor. While he was trying to pick out the powder, the bomb exploded and Totò became the main supporter of the family. In this first part of the episode the film director underlined the miserable conditions in that period after the war in Sicily. Then Totò and his friends Bernardo Provenzano, Calogero Bagarella and Biagio Schirò (a purely fictional character) began to work for Luciano Liggio, a criminal who killed the syndicalist Placido Rizzotto.

While Riina went to prison because he killed Domenico (he was the miller's son), Biagio went away to the world of criminal studies. Biagio Schirò, after finishing the studies, became a policeman and, with the new detective Angelo Mangano, investigated Luciano Liggio who had spread out to Palermo. Meanwhile, Totò was released from prison and met Ninetta Bagarella, the sister of his friend Calogero. After some time, he found out that Ninetta's friend, Teresa, was the girlfriend of Biagio Schirò.

Second episode (1963-1969)

The Corleonese clan are going to do some business with Salvatore La Barbera and Vito Ciancimino. Meanwhile Totò hangs out often with Ninetta and the Corleonesi force their control on Palermo. One evening, when Totò and the others are in a night club, Salvatore La Barbera is taken and killed by Michele Cavataio. The La Barbera clan go out Palermo and the Corleonesi increase their power. The same day, Teresa says to Biagio that Totò will go in Ninetta's, but when the police go there do not find anyone because Totò is able to hide with Calogero. But after some time, while Riina went out by Corleone he is stopped by a police car and sent to prison. But Salvatore Riina corrupts the magistrate and is released because there was not enough proof.

Audience

Curiosity

The miniseries has been watched by Salvatore Riina, now that he is in prison, raising some criticism on the coverage of the topic.
